Best Fishing Spots in Oklahoma: Five Waters, the Exact Spot on Each and the Game Warden's Latest Report

Five Oklahoma waters with a public spot the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's lake pages and game warden reports point to: below Pensacola Dam on Grand Lake, the tailwater berm below Keystone Dam, the Lower Mountain Fork trout area at Beavers Bend, Broken Bow Lake above the dam and the Lower Illinois River below Tenkiller. Bass, crappie and catfish on the lakes; stocked rainbow trout on the two tailwaters.

Key takeaways

  • ODWC posts game warden fishing reports per lake, with species, rating, baits and locations — the October 2026 reports below are quoted as published.
  • Below Keystone Dam, ODWC describes a 1,000-foot wheelchair-accessible berm on the north side of the tailwater, and its warden rated blue catfish 'good' there on cut bait and live shad in late September 2026.
  • The Lower Mountain Fork River Trout Area below Broken Bow Dam is regularly stocked; on October 2, 2026 rainbow trout were 'good' on tube jigs and worms below the dam and spillway.
  • On Grand Lake (41,749 acres), largemouth bass were 'good' on crankbaits, soft plastics and spinnerbaits around brush, docks and rocks on October 4, 2026.
  • An Oklahoma fishing licence is required of everyone 18 or older, per ODWC — note the age: 18, not 16.

How these five were chosen

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation keeps a page for every public water it manages: size, depth, access, management notes, species of interest — and, during the season, a fishing report filed by the county game warden, listing each species with a rating, the baits that are working and where. Every pin here is a spot one of those pages or reports names.

Three of the five are below dams. That is not an accident: in Oklahoma, the tailwaters are where the reports keep pointing — catfish and white bass below Pensacola and Keystone, stocked trout below Broken Bow and Tenkiller.

Timing. ODWC says the peak for most species and anglers is March to June, when it requires the reports; outside that window it suggests calling the county game warden or a local bait shop before you go.

Licence. Required of everyone 18 or older, per ODWC — carry it, or proof of exemption, with identification.

Grand Lake — below Pensacola Dam

Aerial photograph of Pensacola Dam on Grand Lake, the long arched dam holding back the lake and the river flowing out below the powerhouse, with the tailwater pinned

Why it is on the list. Grand Lake is big and deep — 41,749 acres, 460 miles of shoreline, 133 feet at its deepest — and ODWC is actively building it up: hybrid striped bass are stocked regularly, and Florida-strain largemouth have been stocked since 2020. Grand River Dam Authority and Oklahoma State Parks run campgrounds, ramps and fishing docks around it.

Why this exact spot. The October 4, 2026 report names “below the dam” for two of its three species: blue catfish and white bass. The pin is on the river below Pensacola Dam’s powerhouse.

Read the tailwater rules. ODWC’s Grand Lake page sets specific zones below the dam where bowfishing, gigging, noodling and snagging are prohibited, some of them only while the spillway is discharging. Check them before you fish there.

Keystone Lake — tailwater berm

Aerial photograph of Keystone Dam and the tailwater below it, the river flowing east past a park and parking areas on the north bank, with the bank pinned

Why this exact spot. ODWC’s Keystone page describes it: a 1,000-foot berm with wheelchair access on the north side of the tailwater below the Corps of Engineers’ office, plus a 500-foot accessible berm on the south shoreline of the spillway. It is about eight miles west of Sand Springs on US 412 and SH 51, and it is where the warden’s best catfish report comes from.

Technique note. Shad — cut or live — on the bottom off the berm matches the warden’s first-listed baits for blue catfish. ODWC lists striped bass, white bass and flathead catfish among the lake’s species of interest too. Our catfish fishing guide covers the rigs.

Lower Mountain Fork River Trout Area

Why it is on the list. Twelve miles of cold river below Broken Bow Dam, running beside Beavers Bend State Park, where ODWC says trout are regularly stocked. Its species of interest are rainbow and brown trout.

Why this exact spot. The October 2, 2026 report names it: rainbow trout good “below the dam,” in the creek channels and at the spillway. The pin is on the river just below the powerhouse.

Technique note. The warden’s two baits — tube jigs and worms — cover both lures and bait. Our trout fishing for beginners and fly fishing basics guides cover both approaches; Oklahoma State Parks manage the campgrounds and cabins at Beavers Bend.

Broken Bow Lake — above the dam

Aerial photograph of Broken Bow Lake just above the dam, deep dark water between forested points and pale shoreline, with the lower lake pinned

Why it is on the list. Clear water and real depth — 14,200 acres and 169 feet at its deepest, nine miles northeast of the town of Broken Bow off US 259 — with a long species list from ODWC: largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, white and hybrid striped bass, walleye, crappie, catfish and sunfish. The Corps of Engineers and Oklahoma State Parks run ramps and campgrounds.

Why this exact spot. The lower lake near the dam is the deep, clear end, and it is where the Corps and state park access points cluster. The pin is on the water just above the dam.

Technique note. With the lake 9.5 feet low, ramps and shorelines look different than the map — check the Corps lake level ODWC links before you tow. Our crappie fishing guide covers jigging standing timber.

Lower Illinois River — below Tenkiller Dam

Why it is on the list. A 7.75-mile public fishing and hunting area below Tenkiller Ferry Dam, regularly stocked with rainbow trout, according to ODWC, with striped bass, white bass, sauger, walleye and black bass also listed as species of interest. The Corps and ODWC manage the access.

Why this exact spot. The warden’s report names “below the dam” first. The pin is on the tailrace below the powerhouse.

The warden’s comment explains the rating: fishing is slow because of warmer water, low oxygen and a lack of trout stocking. That will change as the water cools and stocking resumes — which is exactly why the report is worth reading before the drive. Our dissolved oxygen page explains why warm tailwater shuts trout down.

Before you go

Licence. Eighteen and older, per ODWC; free fishing days each June.

Read the report, then the rules. ODWC posts the report on each lake page, alongside that water’s regulations — including the tailwater method restrictions below Pensacola Dam. Our licences and regulations guide explains where Oklahoma publishes them.

Respect the release. Three of these pins are below dams. When the generators start, the water rises; stay where you can step back to dry ground.

What it cannot do

  • ODWC says the peak season for most species is March to June, when it requires lake reports. Fall reports are fewer and change weekly; each section gives its report date.
  • Several of these tailwaters carry ODWC restrictions on snagging, gigging, noodling and bowfishing below the dams. Those, and all bag and length limits, are on each ODWC lake page and are not restated here.
  • Lake Eufaula — Oklahoma's largest reservoir at 105,500 acres, by ODWC's count — and Lake Texoma are not here: Eufaula's page carried no current report naming a spot, and Texoma is covered on our Texas page.
  • Tailwaters rise fast when the dam releases water. Treat any water below a dam as moving water.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best fishing in Oklahoma?

For a big, varied lake, Grand Lake: 41,749 acres with 460 miles of shoreline, regularly stocked with hybrid striped bass and, since 2020, Florida-strain largemouth, per ODWC. For trout, the Lower Mountain Fork River Trout Area below Broken Bow Dam, which ODWC says is regularly stocked. For catfish from the bank, the tailwater below Keystone Dam, where ODWC's warden rated blue catfish good in late September 2026. For clear water and deep structure, Broken Bow Lake — 169 feet at its deepest — where largemouth, spotted bass and crappie were all rated good in early October 2026.

Where can you trout fish in Oklahoma?

The two year-round trout areas on this page are both below dams. The Lower Mountain Fork River Trout Area runs 12 miles below Broken Bow Dam beside Beavers Bend State Park; ODWC says trout are regularly stocked, and its October 2, 2026 report rated rainbow trout good on tube jigs and worms below the dam, in creek channels and at the spillway. The Lower Illinois River below Tenkiller Dam is also stocked regularly with rainbows, but the October 4 report rated the fishing slow because of warmer water, low oxygen and a lack of stocking — a reminder to check the report before driving.

What baits work on Grand Lake?

ODWC's October 4, 2026 report: largemouth bass good on crankbaits, soft plastics and spinnerbaits around brush, docks, rocks and shorelines; blue catfish fair on cut bait and shad below the dam, around docks, in the main lake and the river channel; white bass fair on in-line spinners and jigs below the dam, in the main lake and off points. The water was at normal level, 78°F and stained.

Do you need a fishing licence in Oklahoma?

Yes, if you are 18 or older. ODWC's licence requirements page says an Oklahoma fishing licence is required of all persons 18 or older who take, attempt to take or possess fish by any method, and that the licence or proof of exemption and identification must be carried while fishing; electronic licences are allowed. ODWC also holds free fishing days each June — June 5 and 6 in 2027 — when anyone may fish without a state licence.

Can you fish below Keystone Dam from shore?

Yes. ODWC's Keystone page describes a 1,000-foot berm with wheelchair access on the north side of the tailwater below the Corps of Engineers office, and a 500-foot accessible berm on the south shoreline of the spillway. Its September 28, 2026 report rated blue catfish good below the dam and in the main lake on cut bait, live bait and live shad, largemouth bass good on crankbaits, in-line spinners, jigs, minnows and soft plastics around brush, docks and the main lake, and crappie fair on jigs and minnows around brush.

When is the best time to fish in Oklahoma?

Spring, by ODWC's own account. The agency says fishing in Oklahoma can be good nearly all year, but the peak time for most species and anglers is March to June — which is why it requires lake reports during those months. Outside that window it suggests contacting the county game warden or a local bait shop for conditions before heading out.
