BiteScore: The Bite Forecast
BiteScore is a 0–100 score that estimates how favourable conditions are for fishing at your location, hour by hour for the next 24 hours. It combines pressure trend, wind, cloud cover, air temperature, moon phase and — on the coast — wave height and current, and it shows you which of those helped or hurt the score. It is a conditions model, not a prediction of what you will catch.

What the number means
BiteScore rates the conditions you will be fishing in, not the fish themselves. It answers a narrow question — given the weather, pressure, moon and water state at this spot, how favourable does the next 24 hours look compared with a neutral day — and it deliberately stops there.
That distinction matters because it sets what the score is good for. It is a tool for choosing when to go, from a set of days or hours that are otherwise equal. It is not a tool for deciding whether fish are present, which depends on the water rather than the sky.
The app shows the score as a number out of 100 alongside a plain-language band, so you do not have to hold a scale in your head to read it.
Why every score comes with its reasons
Each score is accompanied by the factors that raised and lowered it, because a number you cannot interrogate is a number you cannot judge. If the score is 71, the app tells you that rising pressure and light wind pushed it up and that a cold snap pulled it down.
This is a deliberate design choice over a single opaque figure. Conditions models involve judgement calls about how much each variable is worth, and showing the working lets you disagree with ours. An angler who knows their water fishes better in a stiff wind than the model assumes can see exactly where that assumption was applied.
It also makes the score teachable. Watching which factors move it, day after day, is a reasonable way to learn which conditions actually matter on the water you fish.
Why it changes hour by hour
Conditions are not a daily average, so the forecast is not either. The app builds a curve across the next 24 hours, because pressure trends move, wind builds and drops, and the light changes — and an average across all of that would hide the window you actually care about.
From that curve the app picks a best window and its peak hour. For most people this is the useful output: not a score for tomorrow, but the two or three hours of tomorrow worth driving out for.
Time of day shapes the curve independently of the weather. Dawn and dusk carry weight of their own, which is why an otherwise flat weather day still produces a curve rather than a straight line.
Where the evidence is solid, and where it is thinner
The inputs are not all equally well supported, and it would be dishonest to present them as if they were. Some of what BiteScore reads rests on well-established science, and some rests on angling convention that has never been cleanly tested.
Wind and water temperature are the strong end. Wind mixes oxygen into the water and pushes food against shorelines, and temperature governs the metabolic rate of a cold-blooded animal directly — both are measured, mainstream limnology rather than folklore.
Barometric pressure is the weak end, and it carries real weight in the score. The thresholds that circulate widely in fishing content have no verified research behind them, and the physical effect is small: a full inch of mercury is roughly equivalent to a fish moving about a foot in depth, a change it makes constantly without ceremony. We include the trend because it correlates with weather systems that plainly do affect fishing, not because a pressure number has an established direct effect. Moon phase sits somewhere between. The largest study we found — 341,959 muskellunge angling records — did find a real effect, but a modest one, and its authors noted that angler effort itself varies with the moon. We weight it accordingly rather than treating it as decisive.
How to actually use it
Compare, rather than reading a threshold. The score’s real value is relative: pick the best of the days you could go, and within that day the window it highlights. Waiting for some absolute number before you fish will mostly mean not fishing.
Check it again close to your trip. Pressure trend and wind are the inputs that shift most as forecasts update, and both matter to the score, so a reading from three days out is a rougher guide than one from the night before.
Weigh it against what you know. Local knowledge about a specific water beats a conditions model, and where the two disagree, the model is usually the one that is wrong. BiteScore is most useful when you have no strong reason to prefer one day over another — which, for most anglers planning around work and weather, is most of the time.
What it does not do
- It does not predict whether you will catch a fish. It scores conditions, and conditions are only one of the reasons a day goes well or badly.
- It has not been validated against catch records. The weightings reflect published research and common angling practice, not a model trained on outcomes at your lake.
- It knows nothing about your specific water — stocking, pressure from other anglers, a recent algal bloom, a spawning run or a gate opening upstream will all matter more than the score on a given day.
- It is not species-specific. A day that suits a cold-water trout and a day that suits summer catfish are not the same day, and one number cannot express both.
- It depends on forecast weather data, which can be wrong, and it inherits any error in that forecast.

The more useful habit is comparing hours and days against each other rather than treating any single value as a threshold — a 65 on a week where nothing tops 70 is the best window you are going to get.
Does BiteScore guarantee I will catch fish?
No. It estimates how favourable the conditions are, not what is in the water or whether it is willing to eat. Location, season, species, technique and plain luck all sit outside the model, and a high score on the wrong water still means an empty net.

Yes, and it reads more inputs at coastal and offshore spots. Wave height and current speed are added there and skipped entirely inland, so a lake score and a saltwater score are not built from an identical set of factors.
