The layer that deserves the most trust
Tides are the one layer you can plan around with confidence. Tidal prediction is astronomy combined with long observational records, which is why it can be published far in advance: NOAA generates tide tables for more than 3,000 locations around the United States, and produced printed tables annually from 1867 until 2020.

The layer that deserves the least
Not weather — weather at least publishes its own accuracy. The layer most often over-read is live water level.
USGS states it plainly: real-time gauge data is preliminary or provisional and subject to revision. It is published to meet the need for timely data, not as final approved measurement. An app rendering a river height to two decimal places is showing you a provisional figure with an implied precision it does not have.
That does not make it useless. A river rising fast is rising fast whatever the final approved number turns out to be. It means you should read trend and direction rather than treating the digits as settled.
What combining the layers genuinely buys
Three things, none of which is magic.
Fewer decisions before leaving. Tide state, wind, water level and a map in one glance is a real saving on a dawn start.
Context between layers. A tide stage means something different over a flat you can see the depth of. Wind direction means something different when you know which bank it is pushing into.
One place to re-check. When conditions change mid-session, the app you already have open is the one you will actually look at.
What it does not buy is better data. Every layer is the same public source a specialist app would use.
Where the trade-off bites
Combined apps are broader than they are deep. A dedicated charting app usually has better contours for a specific lake, and a dedicated marine weather service has more offshore detail. If your fishing depends on one layer above all others — offshore passage planning, or a lake where the structure is everything — keep the specialist for that and use the combined app for the rest.
Two other honest caveats. Coverage varies by layer and region, so an app can have excellent tides and thin inland depth data simultaneously. And offline behaviour differs: contours cache well, live conditions cannot.
